Product Overview
Sorbitan oleate is a surfactant formed by the esterification of dehydrated sorbitol with oleic acid. Also known as Span 80, its CAS number is 1338-43-8.
Chemical Properties
Molecular Structure: An ester compound formed by dehydrated sorbitol with oleic acid. The molecular formula is C₂₄H₄₄O₆, and its molecular weight is 464.63.
Appearance: Pale yellow to yellow oily liquid with a slight odor. Insoluble in water and propylene glycol.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Acid Value: ≤8 (General Rule 0713).
Hydroxy Value: 190-215 (General Rule 0713).
Saponification Value: 145-160 (saponification time: 1 hour).
Iodine Value: 62-76 (General Rule 0713). Peroxide Value: ≤10 (General Rule 0713)
SORBITAN OLEATE is a yellow oily liquid that is readily soluble in water, ethanol, methanol, or ethyl acetate, and very slightly soluble in mineral oil. It is a w/o emulsifier with strong emulsifying, dispersing, and lubricating properties. It can be mixed with various surfactants, and is particularly effective when used in combination with Tween-60. HLB value: 4.7, melting point: 52-57°C.
Core Applications & Benefits
Pharmaceuticals
Injectable Solutions: Solubilizer for hydrophobic APIs (≤2% concentration); strictly limit to 100 μg/mL to avoid hypersensitivity risks .
Topical Ointments: Stabilizes W/O emulsions in corticosteroid-antibiotic combinations (e.g., Neomycin/Polymyxin B/Hydrocortisone) .
Cosmetics & Personal Care
W/O Emulsions: Creates stable creams and sunscreens (CIR-safe: ≤7.7% leave-on, ≤0.88% rinse-off) .
Safety Note: Comedogenic risk at high doses; optimize at ≤4% to prevent pore clogging
An excellent oil-in-water emulsifier. Used as a gas chromatography stationary phase (maximum operating temperature 150°C, methanol as solvent) for separating and analyzing oxygenated compounds. Also used as a stabilizer. Also used as a thickener in foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Also used as a fiber lubricant and softener in the textile industry.
Storage & Handling
Conditions: 25°C max, ≤60% humidity, sealed/light-resistant containers
Safety: Non-irritating; use gloves/goggles during industrial handling
