Beyond simply adding scent, fragrance oils are sophisticated olfactory tools. Mastering their use involves understanding scent profiles, notes, and the artistry of blending to create unique, harmonious, and evocative aromas for candles.

The Scent Pyramid in Wax:
Similar to perfumery, candle FOs possess a structure, though its expression differs due to heat:

• Top Notes: The first impression upon lighting. Light, volatile molecules (citrus, herbs, light fruits/alcohols). They provide initial impact but fade fastest as the pool heats. Crucial for the "cold throw" (scent when unlit).
• Middle/Heart Notes: Emerge as the candle burns steadily. They form the core character (florals, spices, deeper fruits, some greens). This is the dominant scent during the main burn.
• Base Notes: The foundation. Heavier, less volatile molecules (musks, woods, vanillas, ambers, resins). They provide depth, warmth, and lasting power, lingering longest in the wax pool and contributing significantly to hot throw longevity.

Blending as an Art Form:
Candle makers blend FOs for several reasons:

• Creating Unique Scents: Combining complementary or contrasting notes (e.g., blending bright lemon with earthy vetiver and sweet vanilla) to craft signature fragrances.
• Enhancing Complexity: Adding depth to a single-note FO (e.g., layering a basic rose with a touch of geranium and honey).
• Balancing Performance: Boosting the throw of a weak FO with a stronger carrier note, or adding base notes to improve longevity.
• Achieving Specific Ambiance: Crafting blends tailored for moods – calming (lavender/chamomile/cedar), energizing (citrus/peppermint/rosemary), cozy (vanilla/cinnamon/amber).

Key Blending Principles:

• Start Small: Test blends in small batches (e.g., by drops in warmed oil or mini wax melts).
• Understand Ratios: Dominant notes (50-70%), Supporting notes (20-30%), Accent notes (5-10%) is a common guideline.
• Consider Wax Interaction: Some notes amplify or mute in different waxes. Test burn blends in the actual wax.
• Document Meticulously: Record every ratio and component for replication.
• Rest: Allow blended oils (and candles made with them) to "cure" for days or weeks; scents meld and mature.
