Why are FOs preferred over essential oils (EOs) in candles?
- Cost & Consistency: Synthetics are generally more affordable and offer batch-to-batch consistency in scent profile and strength, crucial for commercial production.
- Scent Range & Complexity: FOs allow for an almost infinite spectrum of scents, including abstract concepts and complex blends impossible to achieve naturally. They can precisely replicate delicate floral notes that natural EOs struggle with in hot wax.
- Hot Throw Performance: FOs are specifically formulated to vaporize effectively at typical candle burning temperatures (around 120-180°F melt pool), producing a strong, detectable scent (hot throw). Many EOs either fade quickly, burn off, or produce weak throws.
- Stability: Well-formulated FOs resist degradation from heat and light better than many EOs during the candle-making process and shelf life.
